¡°This is not a passive figure, not at all beautiful, not viewed front and center against the cross, but surely as unforgettable as any crucifixion I have ever seen. Dynamic and disturbing, the genderless victim is seen from overhead, thrusting itself forward from the cross, screaming in protest with mouth agape and eyes wide open. The canvas is unstretched, and hangs suspended by two pieces of rope across the top and bottom of the piece. Could this person, like Christ, be a political prisoner raging against the inhumanity of an unjust regime anywhere in the world today? Has anything really changed in 2000 years?¡±

¡°Exodus¡¯ explores the risk and vulnerability of such a salvation, a risk replicated in the form of discipleship to which Jesus calls his followers.¡±

¡°The picture of Jesus, being alone, talking to the Father in Heaven, and the use of dark colors, show me a person in deep agony, so deep an agony that it brings him to an intense conversation with the Lord. Such a portrait of Jesus is not common to Christian tradition. Christ¡¯s suffering is often treated as a rite, and is emphasized in the Eucharist celebration and communion as part of a minister¡¯s usual ritual. Ann Kim nevertheless, pictures the event from an often-forgotten angle, an overwhelming agony. I find this unique and interesting because it perfectly portrays ¡°Asian Liberation Theology,¡± which is a way of understanding suffering. Suffering, however severe it may be, can still be perceived positively as a part of God¡¯s wonderful plan.¡±
